Designs for nomads

I scrolled through all of the Core77 2012 Design Awards this morning. They were inspiring and humbling. Working nomads might take note of two of the winners: Ento – The art of eating insects (seriously), and Marco Triverio’s Feel Me App.

Chirp. Crunch.

North America is one of the few areas that pretty much shuns insects as a desirable food source, a fact I find funny given that we happily chow down all forms of shrimp which are essentially ocean bugs that eat dead stuff. But travel to Central and South America, and many other parts of the world, and you’ll find insects on even high-end restaurant menus.

Not only should nomads discover the delights of expanding their palate, advocating insects as an alternative protein source makes sense for everyone — environmentally and health-wise. I really like how this student design team rethought the insect eating experience. Grilled grasshopper, anyone?

Feel me

Have you ever traced your finger along the lines of a lover’s hand-written postcard, imagining their touch thousands of miles away? Or tried to “kiss” someone via Skype (likely leaving a funky lip print on your laptop lens)? The desire to connect is powerful when we’re far away and unspoken connections are often the most intense. The Feel Me App concept for mobile devices attempts to add the experience of touch to shrink the distance gap, bringing us one dimension closer to those we love. Cue Roger Daltry
